True crime has always been a huge interest of mine, It all started when I first watched Crimewatch when I was younger since then I have been hooked on stories, motives and everything related to true crime.
In this blog post, I am going to be delving into why true crime is so interesting and why so many people are interested in the subject.
Now I am speaking from personal experience so please feel free to share your experience and where your interest began in the comments below this post.
What is True crime?
True crime is a crime that has occurred in real life and isn’t based on a book or film, It’s real-life crimes that have affected people which may then have been written into books and made into films, not the other way around.
Now obviously we aren’t going to go into every crime that happens as we would be here for eternity.
When I talk about true crime on my blog I like to go into the minds of serial killers and the cases that have shaken the world such as a huge, popular one recently which was the Jeffrey Dahmer case.
On my blog, I like to speak about a lot of crime and what is interesting about serial killers and the huge cases is the questions that were answered could also be answered another 100 ways so it’s always a mystery and that’s what fascinates me.
Let’s move on as I’m getting slightly carried away – I will go into individual cases in my posts.
The mystery
The first reason I am going to go into which I briefly mentioned above is the mystery of crime.
Above I mentioned:
“Questions that were answered could also be answered in another 100 ways”
By this, I am thinking about the subject of crime and especially with serial killer cases you can always think of another 100 reasons or ways something may have happened.
This is the beauty of researching and looking into true crime is that you always have something else to think about and research, the mystery is always there.
There is always new information to be found especially when researching unsolved cases you can try and piece together the story and the slightest thing can then turn your suspicion on it’s head.
I think this is one of the main reasons why a lot of people do enjoy true crime as it’s a never-ending book which keeps you thinking and solving.
Education: The mind
Another reason why I study true crime cases is to learn how the human mind works and how it differs from person to person.
Studying true crime cases can give you a great foundation to learn a related field whether it be forensics or Psychology it can spark your interests and maybe even change your career path completely.
For me it made me want to study the mind and how life events can impact how we develop into the type of person we become so this could be upbringing, life events or there have even been some studies that people are born evil.
I will discuss this topic further in a separate blog post where we can dive deeper if this is something that interests you but for now onto the next.
Variation: Every case is unique
When looking at true crime you will rarely come across 2 cases that are exactly the same.
This is another reason why I find this subject so interesting, the variation and uniqueness of everything you will learn.
For example, looking at two different serial killers we can find similarities but there will always be something unique about them whether it be their thinking, the way they do something or their past life experiences.
So if you enjoy learning something new and coming across new information then true crime may be a great subject for you to look into and maybe study further.
Conclusion
This has been a very brief post about just a couple of the reasons why I personally enjoy studying true crime cases and people.
There are so many more reasons but what I would advise is to find your own reasons and study what interests you as a person, you are unique so we are not always going to enjoy the same subject areas.
Going forward I am going to be writing some posts around some of the following:
- Serial killer / Criminal profiles
- Unsolved cases – What happened?
